Volunteering

Wixams has a fantastic small army of volunteers, they help organise the town events and other activities which people in the community can take part in. Volunteer work is a fantastic way to meet new people and make connections. It’s also something to put on your CV, a lot of businesses like to hire people who go the extra mile, and what better way to show that than by giving back to you own community?

On this page we have put together a list of the groups and organisations in Wixams who are on the look out for more volunteers. If you’re interested in getting involved please reach out to them directly, or you can contact them via the Wixams Community Group on the Contact page.

Girlguiding Wixams

We open up a world of possibilities to girls from 4-18 – one where they can do anything. Volunteers in girlguiding help to empower our young members to achieve anything. It is completely flexible, any help you can give will make a big difference. Within Wixams we have two Rainbows, two Brownies and one Guide unit. All the units require volunteers within the meetings and behind the scenes. We also have opportunities for young leaders aged 14 plus. For more details and to register please visit: www.girlguiding.org.uk/get-involved

1st Wixams Scout Group

Each week, our volunteers help young people gain skills for life through activities and adventures. Most of our volunteers work directly with young people aged 4 to 18 through our groups, known as Sections, which are Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers, however we do have roles available on our board of trustees including secretary and executive member.

Giving back will improve your wellbeing, equip you with skills for the future, and help you make a positive impact on the lives of young people.

Contact the Group Scout Leader Jo Westram for more information: jo.westram@biggleswadedistrictscouts.org.uk

Wixams Lego Club

The Lego Club was formed for the children of Wixams in March 2023. The Club which is held weekly on Saturday mornings during school term time has become very popular and busy.

Playing with Lego has known benefits such as developing fine motor skills, improving focus and concentration, inspiring experimentation and adventure and improving communication and teamwork – come and see the benefits of Lego for yourself.

If you would like to join our team of volunteer Lego enthusiasts and make a difference to our community, then please email: legoatwixams@gmail.com

Wixams Events Group

We are a group of volunteers who organise events for the Community. There are three standard events – Christmas Winter Wonderland, Summer Event and Halloween party. We are open to organising other events during the year as required.

The Wixams Events Group is a not for profit organisation and any funds made at one event is invested into the next event. We also rely on sponsorship which for the last five years has been provided by the local developers, Parish Council, Bedford Borough Council. All events are free of charge to enter and all entertainment is free to watch.

New volunteers are very welcome – for more information please email: wixamseventsgroup@gmail.com

Wixams Coding Club

The coding club is there to help people get started with computer programming and to create a community for like-minded people. We have a lot of people who want to learn but we really need more people with programming experience who want to help out.

Recently we bought some cool new toys to play with, including a little device for making basic games, and a kit for building loads of cool little mechanical projects. All are controlled by the BBC micro:bit, a great little device which is easy to program and has many built in functions.

If you’d like to get involved please visit the club’s page for more information: www.wixams.org/coding-club

Wixams News

There’s a small but dedicated team who work very hard to try and bring you the latest news and information about our town, but we need more help!

If you’re interested in writing articles or stories, want to help with planning the content, can support us with coordinating the advertisers, or want to deliver copies in your neighbourhood, please get in touch via email: editor@wixams.news

Wixams Walkers

Our walking group is open to everyone and is part of the national Wellbeing Walks scheme. The walks take place on Saturday mornings and we normally have 2 walk leaders each week. We really need a few more leaders so we can make sure we have cover for every walk.

Training is available for new walk leaders and there’s not a lot to it. Leading a walk is really easy too, the routes are already planned so you just have to make sure you don’t lose anyone along the way!

If you’re interested please get in touch via email or just turn up for a walk one week and let us know. We meet every Saturday at 11am, on Bedford Road outside of Seasons garden centre. Please email: wixamswalkers@gmail.com

Wixams Street Watch

Street Watch is about going for a walk with your neighbours, getting to know people in the area and building up a sense of community spirit. The point of the patrols is to be a visible presence to DETER crime and anti-social behaviour, NOT deal with it ourselves, (if it needs to be dealt with, we log it with the Police).

We ask for a minimum of 2 hours a month but you can do as much as you like. If you would like to register your interest to participate in Street Watch, please email Juliet.Wright@beds.police.uk

Wilstead & Wixams Good Neighbours Scheme

Would you like to help people in our community? We’re on the lookout for volunteers who can support neighbours across Wilstead and Wixams by offering help with things like lifts for appointments, help with shopping, small DIY tasks or even just lending an ear to someone who needs company.

Joining our group is easy: just visit the page below, complete the expression of interest form, email it in and then we’ll be in touch to take you through the next steps which include a DBS check.

Volunteer work is a great way to give back, it’s very rewarding and good way to meet people. It also looks great on your CV! Please visit our webpage for more info: www.wixams.org/wwgns
